An AirPort Express (1st or 2nd 802.11n model) does not support external drives connected to its USB port. If you do decide to acquire a AirPort Extreme and use it as your "main" router, you can still use your Time Capsule for storage. Just connect the TC to the Extreme by Ethernet, reconfigure the TC as a bridge, and disable its wireless radios.
